THE AFAR SALT MINERS OF DJIBOUTI

The Afar Triangle has weather patterns that bring unbearable heat and moisture, as well as strong winds and draught - the in between seems not to touch it. Inhabited only by the Afar, a semi-nomadic people, that grazes cattle and mines salt for a living, the inhospitable nature of the place is intertwined with the spirit of resilience and strong link to tradition of these communities. 

The men leave women behind tending to children, while they seek work in the very little opportunities that are possible, in a lifelong journey to bring little income home, in a world ever more subject to climate challenges, market economies and conflict. Ali, Ahmed and Hamad, three young Afar men who dedicate their lives to salt mining, know this is their only chance at survival in such a world. Here the days have no hours, the elements have no agreement with the people’s needs.
